Edit page command disabled

Posted by: Toni Frankola In: SharePoint  Bookmark and Share

While editing pages on your SharePoint you probably encountered a situation when Edit page command in Site actions menu is disabled (see figure 1).

This is not an error. Edit page command will be disabled when another user has checked-out that particular page. To see which user has done so you will need to navigate to Pages library on your site.

If you have the right permissions and you need to edit the page, you can show the page editing toolbar and then click on Page -> Override Check Out.

This will undo any changes the other users has made and the page will be checked out to you, but is useful if you really need to make a modification to the page.

Actually, this can be due to yet another bug.

I’ve just discovered that if you have a page layout that doesn’t have any field controls placed on the ASPX, MOSS disables the Edit Page command.

In my case all the field controls for my page were wrapped up in a usercontrol loaded from ~ControlTemplates. MOSS didn’t see these and disabled “Edit Page”. As soon as I added another field control to the page layout the command became available again.

In addition to this problem, as the administrator I have lost the Edit Page selection altogether. Other ‘users’ on the site have the Edit Page function. I have full control for the site.

Any ideas?

@Steve: Well I do not know how is this possible… did you modify the master page? Anyway there is no way to tell without taking a closer look.

@sulav: I am not 100% sure that I understood your question. Can you send me a screenshot of SharePoint site where this feature is missing…
