PerformancePoint becomes a part of SharePoint 2007 Enterprise Edition

Posted by: Toni Frankola In: SharePoint

Last week Microsoft announced that PerformancePoint scorecarding and dashboarding capabilities will now become part of SharePoint Enterprise CAL and available to customers who are on SharePoint SA. This means that customers who want to deploy PerformancePoint can do so today at no additional cost.

This is GREAT news for all enterprise customers; you will not have to pay for (very expensive) PerformancePoint licenses just to get scorecards and reports. Now you can use your existing SharePoint infrastructure to deploy these functionalities. Most customers I spoke with were interested in PerformancePoint as a solution, but in most cases it was too expensive to implement. Check differences between SharePoint editions here.

For partners this is an opportunity to sell more enterprise CALs, or to extend existing implementations with some additional reporting and PerformancePoint capabilities.

PerformancePoint Server 2007 will no longer be available as a standalone item after April 1, 2009.

The subject of your blog item

“Microsoft integrates PerformancePoint with SharePoint Enteprise”

is imo a bit misleading.

The product is no more integrated than it was yesterday.

The change is only that you no longer need to pay extra for it but get the right to use it if you already have paid for SharePoint Enterprise.

That to me is not integration.

Hi Mike,

You are one 100% right… this is what happens when one is writing articles in late hours :) . I changed it to: PerformancePoint becomes a part of SharePoint Enterprise.

The key word here is \Enterprise Customers\ will pay no additional cost, but it’s a huge price tag for customers using SharePoint with Standard CALs. Upgrading to Ent CALs will cost them fortune especially companies with thousands of employees.

@Murad: I am aware of the problem, however before this you had to purchase PerformancePoint Server License (around $20000) and additional CALs for it.

Now you only have to purchase additional enterprise CALs (around $70/user). Please note that you only need Enterprise CAL for users that are going to use enterprise functionalities…

There are some other alternatives like this one: http://www.sharepointusecases.com/index.php/2008/08/which-sharepoint-edition-is-right-for-you-part-2/

In any case, if you have a real problem let me know and I will help you to find optimal licensing for your customer.
